How to Avoid Lean Transformation Failure
By John Ballis

Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.
– Lou Holtz

I believe when Lean Strategy Principles are properly understood and applied, the upside for every company is improved productivity at all aspects and will achieve sustainability.

I have personally witnessed CEO’s who have used these 8 principles coupled with new strategy and a company wide vision for a Lean Transformation that improved productivity by 70% or higher.

Despite the reporting of Lean failing at a rate of 96% by the industry leaders (the drive-by experts) I believe in building on what has been started and building a sound strategy and driving these 8 principles as the foundation to help companies achieve a 98% success rate. Experts want to blame the culture, but I would blame it on leadership who puts it in the hands of lower management without the C suites and direct ownership of the journey.

We all know why lean fails. According to the experts it’s no strategy, wrong level of leadership, relying on consultant with no real-life experience, benchmark or coping, trying to use to many lean or six sigma tools sets, wrong education or not educating all employees, and wrong metrics.

Let’s focus on how to setup for success. Leadership must determine a Lean Transformation strategy and vision that can be communicated. Leadership must either use these 8 principles divided into 3 key areas. The 3 C’s of a successful transformation. Customer (internal and external) – Company – Continuous Improvement for culture engagement to drive out waste daily.
