Why are so many Leaders not seeing the money?
By John Ballis

Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.
– Lou Holtz

Remember when the idea of lean manufacturing hit the business world in the 1980s as JIT and/or CFM (continuous flow manufacturing). It spread like wildfire with the book Machine That Changed the World. Today it looks like it is fading away for the thirst for something new. Why are senior leaders of organizations flying blind when the money is right in front of them?

The success of lean has to do with the power of the idea itself of finding waste in the value stream. According to Wikipedia, lean manufacturing is “a production practice eliminating waste for the creation of value for the end customer.”

Lean principles still need to be applied to corporate roles – and the role of the chief financial officer (CFO) is a perfect candidate to champion the effort. Some companies need to trim down: perhaps they have a CFO but they’re not getting the value they need. Others need to beef up profits: the CFO may not have the resources to add a full-time position. Either way, the lean CFO can help by working with a coach that has a track record of success.
